Austrian photographer Josef Dapra (1921 − 2018) was an important documentarian of Salzburg in the post-war period, publishing numerous illustrated books and thus bringing the views of this city to international attention. On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the FOTOHOF archiv presents an overview of the still unknown sides of his photographic life's work, which show him to also be a distinguished modernist of photography.

Influenced by his studies with the Stuttgart sculptor and photographer Adolf Lazi, Dapra's images contain elements of the Neues Sehen mixed with the characteristics of strictly composed street photography. Whimsical scenes of everyday Austrian culture reveal the heterogeneity of a society in flux in the 1950s and 1960s. Josef Dapra's photographs are as formalistic as they are dynamic, underscoring his role as a reflected aesthete and not infrequently humorous interpreter of his time.

The book published by FOTOHOF edition erschienene Buch "Josef Dapra. Das fotografische Werk" contains the first detailed biography and annotated bibliography on the life and work of Josef Dapra and provides an insight into a hitherto little-known part of his photographic work.

The exhibition at FOTOHOF archiv is accompanied by a monographic book. .
