Elfie Semotan is rightly considered the grande dame of Austrian photography, whose work has been documented in numerous exhibitions and publications and is predominantly assigned by the public to the field of fashion and editorial portrait photography.

This major exhibition of more than 50 years of work now focuses on the artist's hitherto little-known private image archive.

FOTOHOF thus honors and positions Elfie Semotan as one of the early and important protagonists of "Autorenfotografie" in Austria. Elfie Semotan's persistent interest in the various possibilities of the medium of photography, her ability to give shape and poetry to the trivial world of things, runs like a thread through her archive, from its beginnings to the present day.

Spector Books publishes books at the intersection of art, theory and design. Here, the medium of the book becomes a stage: a place of encounter and productive debate. Based on the publication "Das Jahr 1990 freilegen" the Leipzig publisher presents its practice of bookmaking. "The question is: Why still write new books? Isn't it more rewarding to engage with the richness of what has already been produced?

Never was this question so close as now, at the beginning of the 21st century. EVERYTHING IS THERE. We can pass from the age of production to that of reception. The year 1990, when the Internet became publicly accessible, also stands for this. From here, the digital present counts, in which we are just learning to orient ourselves. Next to the computer now the scanner and stacks of books." At the new library location at Inge-Morath-Platz 11, publishers Anne König and Jan Wenzel are designing an exhibition. On August 14 at 11 a.m., Jan Wenzel and Alexander Kluge will talk about 1990 and their joint work and read some stories from the book.
