Invitation to visit the exhibitions: Saturday, 20 November, 4−8 pm

Due to the current Covid situation, to our great regret we refrain from a ceremonial opening with speeches and hospitality on this day − but we cordially invite you to visit the exhibitions. Within the framework of the applicable rules, we will offer guided tours in smaller groups by members of our team as needed.
Nevertheless, we hope to be able to toast our anniversary with you in the not too distant future!

As a conclusion and highlight of its 40th anniversary, FOTOHOF looks inward with one eye and outward with the other: At FOTOHOF, the exhibition "Bilder, Dokumente, Artefakte" takes a look back at the exhibition history of FOTOHOF and inward at documents and artifacts of the gallery's operation.
At the same time, at Stadtgalerie Lehen, FOTOHOF looks outward to Austrian and international photo artists who have collaborated with FOTOHOF with the exhibition "one artist - one minute" and whose images are shown in a projection exhibition.

BILDER, DOKUMENTE, ARTEFAKTE
Exhibition at FOTOHOF

The 40th anniversary exhibition showcases how FOTOHOF has evolved from its early beginnings as a small backyard gallery to its present status as a centre for photography that operates at both the national and the international level.

At the heart of the exhibition entitled 40 Years of FOTOHOF – Pictures, Documents, Artefacts are forty selected artworks highlighting FOTOHOF’s exhibition activities, representing a cross-section of all the artefacts presented since its founding. Indeed, each exhibition year features an exhibit from that time. The collection of photographs thus accrued provides an aphoristic insight into how the medium of photography has evolved and been mediated from the early 1980s through to the present. Alongside a brief history of FOTOHOF itself, it also illustrates pivotal phases in the evolution of photography as an artistic medium, from erstwhile marginal phenomenon to emancipated art form in its own right.

Of particular importance for the detailed presentation of FOTOHOF's timeline is the document database created during the anniversary year, which is to be shown to the public as part of the exhibition. It offers comprehensive access to all the testimonies that have emerged over forty years of uninterrupted exhibition activity and art education. Visitors now have the opportunity to interact with this digital project as they delve into the history of FOTOHOF and to find out more about all the documents, exhibition texts, press photos, and selected correspondence with the artists themselves.

The selection of testimonies on FOTOHOF's own history that are featured at the exhibition "40 Years of FOTOHOF – Pictures, Documents, Artefacts" is rounded off by the posters and invitation cards from 400 exhibitions.

one artist − one minute
Exhibition at Stadtgalerie

In this exhibition, the title "one artist - one minute" is taken literally: an artist has the entire gallery at his disposal for one minute. During this time, he or she can show at least one picture and a maximum of 20 pictures in the form of a projection on four walls in the Stadtgalerie; the respective picture title is projected on another wall.

FOTOHOF is organising this exhibition on the occasion of its 40th anniversary at the invitation of the Stadtgalerie in its rooms. All artists who have had an exhibition at Fotohof in the last 40 years were invited to participate in the concept. What was wanted was a work that was as up-to-date as possible and that could also be realised in the form of a projection. More than 160 participants made their work available; if a visitor wants to see the entire exhibition, he or she would have to spend almost 3 hours in the gallery.

This "visual overload" is part of the exhibition's concept and alludes to the image consumption of contemporary net culture. As a counterbalance, an alphabetically ordered and analogue printed "score" of the projection is laid out on a desk in the exhibition room, where all the works shown can be looked up. And in an adjoining room, a cosy reading corner with books by all the participating artists, also marked alphabetically, slows down the pace of the exhibition.

The exhibition at Stadtgalerie provides a great overview of contemporary photographic art and unites Austrian and international photographers in a large visual panopticon.
